The importance of temperature for drugs USB temperature data logger

Most medicines should be stored at room temperature, between 20 and 25°C. Many prescription drugs are highly sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, and both their potency and effectiveness can be altered if exposed to extreme heat.

Like cooking an egg on the sidewalk

The active ingredients in some drugs can break down at temperatures above 30°C. A bit like breaking an egg on the sidewalk in extreme heat - the yolk and white go from liquid to solid as the egg cooks. Liquid medicines and creams may lose their stability under conditions of high heat, while the suspension or emulsion may separate. Capsules, powders and tablets may also degrade if exposed to very high heat.

Some drugs, however, may remain stable for short periods if exposed to moderately high temperatures.

Medicines should never be left in a car, especially in the trunk or glove compartment, as the temperature inside a closed vehicle can reach extremes. Also, when traveling by air, put your medication in your hand luggage rather than in your checked luggage.

Don't give any medication that is discolored, has an unusual odor or texture, or looks damaged, and don't use creams that are dissociated.

Vital medicines, such as heart medications, anticonvulsants, hormonal drugs and insulin (including test strips), should not be exposed to heat, even for short periods.
